The home appliance industry faces a perfect storm: brands demand luxury finishes such as piano black or brushed metal, environmental regulations restrict solvent-based painting, and cost competition never sleeps. For large parts like refrigerator doors, air conditioner front panels, and washing machine lids, traditional injection molding plus offline painting can add 20–35% to unit cost and emit harmful VOCs. Is it possible to obtain a scratch-resistant, high-gloss surface directly from the mold, integrate seals and soft-touch features, and shorten lead time by two weeks? KSHOW, with over 15 years of mold-making heritage in Taizhou, China’s plastic mold capital, answers yes—with integrated high-gloss paint-free molds and multi-material overmolding.
Achieving a piano-polished gloss level (GU> 90) in injection-molded parts requires ultra-precise cavity surface processing. KSHOW employs five-axis high-speed milling combined with imported Japanese mirror-like electrical discharge equipment to control cavity surface roughness below Ra 0.02 μm – equivalent to mirror finish quality. Crucially, the rapid cooling/heating (temperature-shifting) technique involves rapidly heating the mold surface above the plastic's thermal deformation temperature, enabling the melt to perfectly replicate the mold's micro-surface flatness during filling, followed by instant cooling to eliminate weld lines, floating fibers, and dents. For a large refrigerator door panel mold designed for a renowned Southeast Asian home appliance brand, this technology elevated surface gloss from traditional GU 78 to GU 94 without requiring post-spray treatment, achieving an annual production capacity of 120,000 units per mold set and reducing unit costs by approximately $2.30. Large household appliance casings often require the integration of a rigid structure with flexible sealing, shock absorption, or anti-slip features within a single component. KSHOW's multi-material overmolding technology enables the composite molding of rigid materials such as PP and ABS with elastomers like TPE and TPU in a single mold cycle. For instance, the washing machine lid frame requires a waterproof sealing strip around its perimeter; traditionally, this was achieved by separate injection molding followed by manual assembly—a process that is time-consuming and yields poor sealing consistency. Our designed dual-injection mold first forms the PP frame at the first station; after rotating the mold 180 degrees, TPE is injected at the second station to create a permanently bonded seal. The entire process is fully automated, reducing the unit production time from 68 seconds to 52 seconds and lowering the assembly defect rate to below 0.3%. This technology is also applicable to components such as air conditioner vent blades and refrigerator drawer handles.
A typical improvement case comes from a established Eastern European home appliance manufacturer (referred to as "Client A" due to confidentiality agreements). The original design for the front panel of their new drum washing machine featured ABS injection molding, primer, and UV finish. However, with stricter environmental regulations, the VOC-containing spraying process was facing closure. Upon receiving this request, KSHOW proposed an integrated solution combining high-gloss spray-free molds with a rapid mold temperature adjustment system. We first conducted Moldflow analysis on the product's 3D data to optimize gate positioning and relocate weld lines away from visible areas. The molds were fabricated from imported ASSAB S136 mirror steel with localized conformal cooling channels. The initial trial molding achieved a gloss level of GU 92 without visible weld lines, completed within just 28 days from Phase T0 to Phase T1. Client A not only avoided spray coating costs but also reduced unit costs by 28%, while ensuring full recyclability of the panels in compliance with EU circular economy standards. After testing, the client's project manager reported via WhatsApp: "With GU 92 gloss achieved without any spraying and development time reduced to 28 days, we've decided to adopt KSHOW's solution for all subsequent model iterations."
These molds not only require high precision but also typically exceed 800 mm × 600 mm in dimensions and weigh several to over ten tons. KSHOW's factory in Huangyan, Taizhou is equipped with a 1,500-ton mold closing machine, multiple gantry machining centers, and Zeiss coordinate measuring systems, capable of processing molds up to 2,500 mm × 1,800 mm in size. Recently, our technical team has completed an advanced Moldflow training program and implemented a digital mold design platform, ensuring full transparency and traceability throughout every stage—from DFM to prototype manufacturing. You can contact KSHOW at any time via the following channels:
